Building a by-the-day team of case managers to call on when absence or leave threaten to bite into discharge times or your budget can help protect a department. Benefits include paying a regular hourly rate, rather than overtime, improved permanent employee morale, and reduced impact on patient flow. To put together a back-up case management team, consider the following candidates:
- Former case management team members who may be interested in working reduced hours and who will require little training.
- Experienced part-time managers from other facilities who may be looking for extra work.
- Case managers or nurses from related fields, such as home health.
- Nurses with little or no case management experience. Despite the potential risks, such employees can be trained to fit a department's needs.
