One of the biggest challenges for directors of case management is to stay aware and informed of new quality and payment changes by both federal and state agencies, as well as managed care insurers.

Staying informed is key to directors remaining on the cutting edge while maintaining a hectic schedule. The following are strategies that will help you stay up to date and on top of changes:

  • Visit the CMS Web site regularly and review the Federal Registry

  • Attend your State Hospital Association Meetings, especially if it includes case management meetings. If case management meetings are not available, then recommend them

  • Connect often with your state's Quality Information Organization (QIO). Use your QIO as an expert on all Medicare and Medicaid questions.

  • Join a case management organization that fits your needs. Organizations provide networking opportunities, conferences, and publications, which can be very beneficial.

  • Network with your peers from other hospitals and across your state for benchmarking information. They may be able to help you avoid reinventing the wheel when it comes to policy in your organization.
