Financial reports are the bread and butter of a case management department. Unlike other nursing and social work arenas, case management departments can actually generate measurable amounts of revenue and/or cost-savings to hospitals and other healthcare providers. This revenue generating ability provides case management departments with the opportunity to validate their existing full time equivalents (FTE's) and the potential to financially support the establishment of new case management programs or staff.

One of the most traditional financial reports received by case management directors is the LOS report. The hospital's LOS report is generated by the finance department and can usually be received on a daily basis when requested. Reviewing this report allows the director to manage the LOS by identifying trends and variations in an individual hospital's LOS over time. The advantage of doing this is that case management staff can be informed of gains and losses in LOS, allowing time to make adjustments in discharge planning strategies in an effort to successfully leverage each month's budgeted LOS.
