The number of adults without health insurance jumped by two million from 2005 to 2006, according to a new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the report, the highest number of newly uninsured is the non-elderly population between the ages of 18 to 64. The increase in this demographic reflects the high cost of healthcare, which has led many employers to stop offering coverage to workers and individuals to stop buying private insurance, according the report's researchers.
The number of uninsured children decreased from about 10 million in 1997 to an estimated 6.8 million in 2006. There were an estimated 6.5 million uninsured children in 2005, according to the report.
