Experts say the serious shortage of nurses is one of the biggest threats to the U.S. healthcare system, NBC's "Nightly News" reports.

NBC's special segment on healthcare aired last week featuring Bernadette Melnyk, dean of nursing at Arizona State University. According to Melnyk, the number of medical errors and patient deaths related to poor quality will only increase until the nursing shortage is improved.

Other experts interviewed on the program say several factors contribute to the shortage of nurses, including:

  • A lack of qualified teachers at nursing schools
  • A growing population
  • High turnover due to job stress
  • Higher salaries for nurses who work as executives instead of care providers
