Joint Commission Resources (JCR), the education and consulting arm of The Joint Commission, is soon to begin a study on how to increase patient safety through better communication. According to the accreditor's Sentinel Event database, communication is cited as the cause for nearly 70% of reported sentinel events.

JCR is currently looking for volunteer organizations to participate in the study, which will develop a training series to help nurses and medical staff communicate more effectively. The training is free to participating healthcare organizations, which would receive the necessary training materials to create safer environments for both staff and patients. The finished project should be available to hospitals by fall 2008.
