Americans have the most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet rank below other healthcare systems in Britain, Canada, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand, according to a report issued last week by the Commonwealth Fund, a non-profit, bipartisan healthcare think tank.

According to the report, Britain had the best system in terms of quality, access, and overall healthy lives. The report also found that every country that out-ranked the U.S. had universal health insurance.

The U.S. healthcare spending by government, employers, insurance, and individuals averaged $6,102 per person in 2004--more than the average spent on individuals in every other country after adjusting for the local cost of living, according to the report.
