In a three-part series last week, Newsweek examined how there is no silver bullet solution to the dysfunctional state of U.S. emergency departments. The article focuses on three Institute of Medicine reports released last year that reveal that EDs across the country face a shortage of on-call specialists, inadequate coordination between EDs, hospitals and ambulance teams, and a lack of preparedness for large disasters.

The reports recommend increased Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for hospitals that provide a large amount of uncompensated care to uninsured patients. Additionally, the reports call on Congress to establish an agency for emergency care within the Health and Human Services department.
