Hospitals are using a number of methods to improve patient flow, including flow coordinators and management-level meetings on bed needs, according to a St. Cloud (MN) Times article.

At St. Cloud Hospital, nurse coordinators are trained to manage the movement of patients in and out of beds. The coordinators consider factors like staffing levels and patient needs when making the placements, which improves the level of care and speeds the process.

Other hospitals have used high-level meetings to discuss the daily need for beds, discharges, and transfers in the hospital. That creates a managerial imperative to improve patients' lengths of stay and to speed discharges, cleaning, and placement, according to the Times.
