Directors of case management may be registered nurses, social workers, or business professionals, which means they often manage individuals from different professional groups than their own.
One of the biggest challenges for directors of a diverse professional staff, regardless of the director's own background, is to meet the growth, development, and individual needs of each group in a fair and balanced manner.
The following tips will help directors optimize the management of a professional group that differs from his or her own professional background:
1. Respectfully acknowledge the individual differences and special contributions of each professional group.
2. Identify the different state licensing renewal requirements for each profession, such as continuing education unit (CEU) requirements.
3. Hold regular staff meetings with the entire staff, plus routinely meet with each professional group separately to make sure that the individual needs of each group are identified and acknowledged.
4. Facilitate educational programming that benefits all professional groups as a whole and separately. The key is to be fair, balancing the recognition of each group.
5. Be aware that stressors may vary among each group, and devise unique stress reduction programs, such as debriefing sessions after prolonged periods of managing complex cases
