Townsville Hospital, located in Townsville, Australia, has created a new emergency medical unit to help take the pressure off the oft-used ED and improve patient flow. The unit allows the hospital to hold and observe patient further while allowing more patients to use the ED, according to a hospital press release.

The unit gives healthcare providers more time to order tests and observe patients, and then decide whether the patient should be admitted to the hospital. About 75% of patients are discharged from the emergency medical unit within 24 hours and most patients who require further care are admitted within 48 hours, according to the release.
