Only about 50% of chronically ill patients in the U.S. and other industrialized nations take their medications as directed, according to a report in USA Today.

In a similar study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), researchers estimate that 125,000 Americans die each year as a result of medication adherence issues and the number of deaths in developing countries is significantly higher.

Doctors in both studies said that lack of medication adherence cuts across all socioeconomic groups and that the problem often goes unrecognized.

According to the USA Today report, the reasons why patients fail to take their prescriptions is complex, but a few of the possible possibilities include:

  • Powerful side effects such as depression
  • Misconceptions about medications
  • Patients not adjusting well to their diagnosis
  • Drug costs
