Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, IL, has over 1,000 licensed beds and typically runs close to capacity. The hospital has made some changes to improve patient flow, according to the Detroit Free Press. The changes have helped to reduce ED wait times from about eight hours in 2005 to just over two hours in February 2007.

The hospital has implemented "bed huddles," where key members of the staff meet to discuss likely discharges. That keeps housekeeping, transporters, and medical staff on the same page so rooms are quickly cleaned and turned over for a new patient.

Other improvements include an express admissions unit, which is operated with hospitalists and allows patients to be admitted into the hospital while avoiding the ED. The hospital also uses a capacity management director to coordinate efforts to move patients safely through the continuum of care
