Long waits, tests slow cancer patient flow

A new study offers some insight into the amount of time cancer treatment patients lose to appointments, wait times, and testing. The total of lost time adds up to about $2.3 billion in lost productivity, according to an Associated Press article.

The study measured the amount of time patients took for active care, and did not include down time at home, such as recuperating from treatment. The study is published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The study also showed that cancers that were caught early required less treatment time, according to the article. Targeted cancer treatments also took less time than traditional approaches.
