Millions of U.S. residents lack assess to preventive care
While the overall quality of the U.S. healthcare system continues to improve, millions of U.S. residents still do not have access to preventive care, according to a report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a non-profit governmental research agency.
According to the report, minorities, the poor, and especially the uninsured are not getting the tests, exams, and advice from doctors that can lessen the health burden from asthma, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
In particular, the report found that black residents with asthma are less likely than other residents to receive medications for their conditions and that black and Asian residents receive colon cancer tests at a lower rate than white residents.
AHRQ Director Carolyn Clancy told the Arizona Daily Star, "It's encouraging to learn that overall quality continues to improve, but the message is clear: Much more can be done to prevent illness from occurring to progressing."
