When and why patients should visit the ED is an important question, as more people use EDs for nagging but non-emergency ailments and as their primary healthcare source. A Boston Globe "Health Answers" column offers some tips for patients on when to go to the ED and when to call their primary care provider.

In general, acute onset of bleeding, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, or fatigue means you should head to the ED. Vision changes, bowel irritability, and vomiting are other cues to visit emergency services.

Patients should call their physician while on the way to the ED, and try to keep a list of medications, allergies, and other medically important information.
