The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, a federally funded, non-profit organization, recently certified products from 19 companies in a continuing effort to do away with paper in healthcare. The commission says that buying certified products will increase the chances of seamless use with other systems and decrease the chance that the technology will quickly become obsolete.

According to USA Today, only 14 to 17% of doctors use electronic records. It is widely thought that increased use would cut down on medical errors, while improving care for patients.

The commission will certify products on three different levels: outpatient records, inpatient records (2007), and shared networks (2008).
