Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has announced an initiative that would require physicians to use electronic prescriptions, which would eliminate errors associated with bad penmanship and prohibited abbreviations. The change would also help pharmacists determine whether a patient's prescriptions would contraindicate or otherwise cause a negative reaction, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The initiative also creates a division of patient safety within the department of public health. The division would oversee the e-prescription crossover, along with other proposals, such as broadband Internet connections for rural health agencies.

The initiative sets a goal date of 2011 for most of its provisions, but Blagojevich hopes to switch prescriptions over in the next year.
