The Wall Street Journal reported June 28 on several hospitals that are using information technology (IT) to prevent medical errors during patient handoffs. Handoffs became a prime area of focus for hospitals over the past several years, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations now requires hospitals to have in place a standardized process for hand-off communications.
The article quotes David Bates, MD, chief of general medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, as saying that electronic systems foster safe handoffs because a standard set of information is exchanged in every case.
The article also notes that the University Health System Consortium, which consists of nearly 100 academic medical centers, will soon begin offering members a Web-based training program called "Do No Harm," that outlines strategies for improving handoff communication.
