According to an article in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, hospitalization of an individual's spouse appears to be linked with an increased risk of death for the caregiving partner.

The researchers studied more than 500,000 couples, finding that the effect of an illness on the patient's spouse varied by diagnosis. For example, partners with spouses hospitalized with stroke, hip fracture, and psychiatric disorder had the highest mortality risks.

For men, the overall risk of death attributed to a spouse's hospitalization was 22%. For women, the risk was 16%.
