Phoenix's Banner Estrella Medical Center is a paperless hospital; all patient charts, records, and order entry are stored via computer. The medical center has become a model facility as the state pushes its hospitals to go paperless, according to The Arizona Republic.
Staff members at the hospital say the new system increases flow because less time is spent looking for charts, reviewing patient histories, and checking with previous personnel about changes in care, because everything is recorded through the electronic system. Patient histories and medication lists, for example, are available in the system. As a result, nurses and physicians said they spend more time treating patients.
Physicians must use electronic recordkeeping to work at the hospital. Anything that requires a patient's signature is scanned into the recordkeeping system.
