The use of telemedicine devices that keep tabs on patients is continuing to increase, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. Facing a growing number of complex cases and nursing shortages, the healthcare industry is purchasing devices and digital services for home monitoring at a record pace.
One such device is a vital sign monitor that includes a glucometer, a blood pressure cuff, a finger sensor, and a video function. Another popular mechanism is a bathroom scale that plugs into phone jacks to allow nurses to monitor heart patients who have been discharged and returned to home.
More than 8,000 home care agencies in the U.S. that provide services to Medicare patients report using some form of remote monitoring. Sales of such devices are projected to grow from $461 million in 2005 to $2.5 billion in 2010, according to the article.
