Tip of the week: Integrate clinically competent RNs into your case management model

Wendy DeVreugd, R.N, F.N.P., director of case management services at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center (OCMMC) in Orange County, California, recommends using clinically competent RNs in the product lines of all hospital business, whenever possible.

For example, if your hospital has a transplant or cardiac program, the case manager who is handling and reviewing the specialty cases should have strong clinical experience in that specialty. This means that when the case manager is evaluating and working with the patient's case, he or she knows the clinical parameters, risks, issues, and needs of the patient, according to DeVreugd. This establishes the credibility of the case manager with the managing attending physicians in the case.

"One can always train in the area of case management and finances," says DeVreugd, "but one must be clinically competent in the background of the specialty to identify and handle the issues."
