The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed changing how hospitals administer discharges. The proposed rules would create a standardized process for discharges in line with what's done now at skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies. The announcement is in the April 5 Federal Register.
The new process is a two-step notice that uses simplified paperwork and gives Medicare and Medicaid patients a chance to appeal their discharge. If the patient does appeal the discharge, a more detailed form is then used to record the discharge and dispute, according to the register entry.
The proposal is currently in the 60-day comment period. Healthcare professionals may submit electronic comments on specific issues or concerns in this regulation to http://www.cms.hhs.gov/eRulemaking by June 5th, 2006.
