Consumers will be able to get regional pricing information for more than 55 hospital-based medical procedures under an Internet initiative launched March 20. HealthGrades Inc., a healthcare ratings company, said its Medical-Care Cost Report contains information on the list price for a medical procedure, the portion of that price paid by health insurance plans, and the out-of-pocket expense borne by the patient.
Access to specific medical costs is more important than ever with the trend of traditional HMOs being replaced by consumer-directed health plans. Under such plans, consumers are allotted only a certain amount of money to spend each year on health services, forcing them to become more conscientious shoppers.
The website (www.HealthGrades.com) also includes data on hospital fees, as well as physician, laboratory, and prescription drug costs, and will include information on procedures ranging from baby deliveries to bypass surgeries
