A new procedure to reduce the fluid in congestive heart failure patients may also reduce the length of stay for patients. The blood filtration method tested showed shorter hospital stays and better fluid reduction than traditional diuretic pills, according to Springfield, MA, The Republican.

The process, described as similar to a smaller-scale dialysis, filters the blood for excess fluid. Bayside Medical Center in Springfield participated in the study, and tried the treatment on 11 patients. There are approximately 100 hospitals nationwide currently using the technology, according to The Republican. Bayside will continue to offer the treatment.
