Burnaby Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, has discovered that questioning seniors on specific health status issues while in the ED can reduce length of stay. According to Burnaby officials, the questions provide answers that help to direct these patients to the best care options. That has led to a decrease in length of stay from 15.4 to 11.46 days, according to the Burnaby News Leader.

The questions are aimed at discovering chronic conditions that require specific care. Researchers at the hospital treated 592 elderly patients over 45 days last year. The patients were initially treated in the ED, and researchers then asked questions to determine chronic illnesses, lifestyle choices, and medications to focus care.
