Memorial Hospital in York, PA, now uses two patient flow coordinators to help facilitate tests, room changes, housekeeping details, and other matters that help improve flow.
The coordinators work under the ED director, and assist him with tasks to free up his time. For example, the coordinators visit patients with the physician and write down any orders given. That frees up the physician to do other work than fill out the paperwork.
The team also keeps track of outstanding test results, X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Coordinators call housekeeping to clean emptied patient rooms faster, which allows another patient to use the space.
The coordinators also act as point persons to collect questions and information for the physician, which reduces the number of interruptions he or she experiences.
