Researchers at Arizona State University (ASU) are studying ways to improve patient flow in the state's hospitals. Researchers hope to develop a "Door to Doctor" toolkit to help hospitals see every emergency room walk-in patient within 20 minutes, according to a press release on the ASU Web site.
Part of the solution will require parallel tracks for nurses, physicians, and administrative staff. Instead of each element processing a patient chronologically, many services and treatments can be done concurrently to save time, according to the press release. Other elements include studying every hospital department to reduce chain effect delays with transfers, and studying queuing theory on why lines and delays occur in the first place.
