The number of Americans over the age of 85 is expected to triple by the year 2030, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. People 85 or older comprise the largest percentage of residents at long-term care facilities, and they populate acute-care facilities in high numbers. The demographic trends indicate that the challenge of managing and coordinating care for elderly patients will grow more complex over time as the elderly population grows significantly.
