The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is to collect hospitals' patient satisfaction survey results (on a voluntary basis) beginning this fall, and will post the data online some time in late 2007. Training will begin in February for hospitals that plan to participate.
Consumers will be able to access the survey results on CMS' Hospital Compare Web site, which will display various measures based on data from participating hospitals' patient records.
Initially, the site will enable consumers to compare hospitals in their communities on the quality of the services they provide for certain conditions, such as
- heart attack
- heart failure
- pneumonia
- various surgeries
CMS hopes to increase the number of measures and types of conditions and treatments on which the hospitals will report over time.
