Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, has started using five-level triage when admitting patients in the emergency room. That's a change from the more traditional three-level system. Hospital officials hope the change allows for faster and better care for patients.

The five levels include:

  • Level 1, in which immediate lifesaving measures are needed
  • Level 2, in which care must be rapid, but not necessarily immediate
  • Level 3 is care for patients who may need more than one resource, such as an MRI, X-Ray, IV fluids, and simple medical procedures
  • Level 4 patients require one resource
  • Level 5 patients require no resources, needing only oral medication or other low level treatment

The goal of the triage system is to better funnel patients through the system, rather than have patients wait for care.
