The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) last week put out a proposed standard that would require all healthcare organizations to reduce the risk of influenza infection and transmission. Organizations would need to establish an immunization program for staff, students, volunteers, and licensed independent practitioners who work with or near residents at high risk for influenza-related complications, including providing flu shots at the facility at no cost and educating workers to the value of flu vaccination. The JCAHO said only 34-36% of staff and licensed independent practitioners are immunized against the flu each year.
