The Maryland Patient Safety Center has launched a program to reduce overcrowding in the emergency department. The plan includes patient outreach and changing procedures inside the ED.

The Center intends to educate the public that emergency room care is not needed for the sniffles or minor aches and pains, and that such problems are better handled at urgent care facilities or through physician visits.

The program will lobby the state to establish more community-based care centers that are open on nights and weekends, and opposes further reductions in funding for such locations. The Center advocates the addition of comfort items such as televisions to satisfy waiting patients and suggests incentives be offered to bring more professionals into the medical field.
