Two Delaware hospitals are using remote links and cameras to connect intensivists and other specialty practitioners with more patients. The new technology enables off site specialists to remotely monitor patients at the hospitals, increasing the number of patients the physicians can see, according to The News Journal of Wilmington, DE.

The system is not intended to replace staff at the hospital. Instead, it provides the facilities with "an extra set of eyes and ears and brains," according to the project's leader. The system uses 15 monitors and three computers to monitor 33 ICU beds in the two hospitals. One of the hospitals only has nine ICU beds, which makes hiring a full-time intensivist difficult.
