"CMS, we have a problem": turbulent launch for Medicare Part D
Thousands of Medicare beneficiaries who enrolled in the new drug benefit were unable to fill their prescriptions last week because of problems verifying their eligibility. Monitors from advocacy groups across the country witnessed beneficiaries showing up to different pharmacies and walking out empty-handed, or in some instances paying inappropriate copayments.
Pharmacies reported that beneficiaries-mostly dual eligibles-were unable to fill their prescriptions because they had not received cards from their insurers verifying their eligibility. Other problems included busy help lines at heath insurers and incorrect paperwork.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) attributed the delays to the new verification system being overwhelmed, but said the problem is being addressed, and that efficiency has already significantly improved.
