A new patient smart card program at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City will provide patients with cards that store medical records. If the system is standardized, patients will be able to carry their medical information with them to different facilities when they get treatment.

The card will store the information on a secure chip and a personalized number will allow access to the encrypted information. The card allows providers to override normal access procedures during an emergency, such as when the patient is unconscious.
