The drugs most often used by senior citizens are 48% more expensive under the new Medicare Part D drug plans when compared to prices negotiated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), according to a study issued by healthcare consumer group Families USA.

While senior citizens will not pay the full drug price under the benefit, they will pay about one-fourth of the new drug program's costs through premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. Taxpayers will cover the rest of the cost. The study also found that for 19 of the 20 drugs most frequently used by senior citizens, the lowest price negotiated by VA is much lower than the lowest Medicare prescription drug plan price.
