Tip of the Week: Avoiding discharge confusion
A recent study in Mayo Clinical Proceedings, published by the Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic, revealed that a significant number of patients discharged from hospitals were unaware of vital information about their diagnosis and follow up care. Sixty-two percent could not explain the purpose of their medications, and 58% did not know their diagnosis.
The study recommends
- hospitals facilitate better communication with patients, recognizing cultural differences
- verbal and written communication need to be in terms patients understand
- treatment plans must be customized to fit the person's lifestyle
When patients are better connected to resources, the study concludes, they will experience a smoother recovery and less confusion.
