House Democrats are attempting to force the chamber to vote on legislation (H.R. 3861) extending the deadline for Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in the program's prescription drug benefit without penalty. Starting December 16, House members could begin signing a discharge petition to force a floor vote on the Medicare Informed Choice Act. The bill would extend the deadline for enrolling in the new drug benefit to the end of 2006, instead of May 15, 2006, and would allow beneficiaries to make a one-time change in plan enrollment during 2006.
