Twenty-six percent of HIV-infected adults have experienced discrimination by a healthcare provider, according to national study published in the October issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The study surveyed 2,466 HIV-infected adults and found that

  • 54% attributed their discrimination to physicians
  • 39% attributed their discrimination to nurses and other clinical staff
  • 32% attributed their discrimination to dentists
  • 31% attributed their discrimination to other hospital staff
  • 8% attributed their discrimination to social workers and case managers

Of the 26% who reported experiencing discrimination, 20% said that a healthcare provider had been uncomfortable with them; 17% said they had been treated in an inferior way; 18% said the person preferred to avoid them; and 8% said they had been refused service.
