Study: Outpatient angioplasty as safe as inpatient stay

A new Canadian study finds that advancements in angioplasties can allow for same-day discharge for patients. If the procedure is performed by entering through arteries in the arm, hospitals can send patients home with basic anti-clotting medication instead of keeping them overnight.

Patients who were released the same day had the same rate of infection and complications as patients who were kept at the hospital after the procedure, according to the study. By entering the body through the arm, the risks of internal bleeds at the entry point are decreased.
