Healthcare professionals in the United Kingdom have stepped into the electronic age, replacing the old-fashioned medical records processing system of hard files and handwritten notes with a new digital system that allows personnel to access patient records with the click of a button.

The British government spent an estimated $10 billion on the system, which is set to go live this month. Fifty million patient records will be available once the system is fully installed. The network will contain records of a patient's every interaction within the healthcare system and will enable doctors to transmit medical records such as prescriptions to pharmacists. The network also enables patients to book medical appointments online and search for medical facilities to visit.

By contrast, the U.S. government has provided about $200 million for medical-records-management projects. Most of the funding for networking of hospital records in the U.S. has come from the private sector.
