In an effort to save money in light of increasing healthcare costs, some large companies are opening on-site medical clinics that offer employees treatment for free or at prices lower than the company's health plan. Companies such as Capital One Financial Corp., Discovery Communications Inc., and Sprint Nextel Corp. are now among the employers offering the benefit.
Many of the clinics, which are staffed by physicians and/or nurse practitioners, offer basic care for sick employees, as well as annual physicals, immunizations, physical therapy, and low-cost prescriptions.
While there has been little research about the cost-effectiveness of corporate clinics, benefits experts say some employers who have had medical clinics for several years have cut employee health costs by as much as 25%.
