Construction of a state of the art cardiovascular center began this month in Boston, where the 136-bed, 10-story building is set to be completed by 2008.
The center, part of Brigham and Women's Hospital, will be connected to the hospital's existing complex by a bridge and will house the latest technology in heart care, including a "hybrid" operating room, which allows seriously ill patients to undergo multiple surgeries without being moved from one room to another.
The center will include an electronic tracking system capable of monitoring both patient and equipment flow throughout the building, single rooms for all patients, complete with fold-out couches and large windows, and small nursing stations attached to each room.
By putting all of its heart patients in one building, the hospital hopes to schedule procedures and discharges more efficiently, reducing LOS and unnecessary costs.
