New Jersey-based Meridian Health and Virginia and North Carolina-based Sentara Healthcare are this year's recipients of the Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality at a Local or Organizational Level award, given by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and National Quality Forum (NQI).
Meridian Health received the award for making significant improvements in the quality of care delivered to patients after embedding evidence-based best practice guidelines into their computer-based physician order entry system. Physicians are now able to follow interactive practice guidelines when ordering prescriptions with the computer.
Sentara Healthcare, a not-for-profit healthcare provider, won the award for establishing and promoting a system-wide culture of safety through a comprehensive, error-prevention initiative. Key strategies include setting error prevention expectations for all staff, implementing a "Common Cause Analysis Program," and re-designing key work processes to foster safety.
