Officials at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY, are keeping patient flow and comfort in mind as they redesign their ED. The changes will include larger, quieter bays for patients and discharge rooms to open up beds for treatment, according to The Ithaca Journal.
Other time-saving measures are being considered, such as a dedicated elevator between the ED and ICU, and larger storage areas to help organize supplies. The facility will increase the number of treatment rooms from the current 14 to 20 rooms.
The nurses' station, placed in the middle of the department, will have a "racetrack" flow to ease staff movement. The current facility's station is cramped and requires non-linear movement, leading to bottlenecks.
Each bay will have glass partitions instead of a curtain, which will make things quieter for patients and staff alike.
