Staff at the Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL, were once embarrassed by their reputation of having long wait times in the emergency department. But now, thanks to a major redesign, the hospital has dramatically decreased the wait in emergency and inpatient admissions and improved patient flow.
According to Jeff Brickman, Provena's CEO, the hospital increased the capacity of the emergency medicine department by 50%, enabling 75,000 annual visits instead of its prior 47,000. They did this by eliminating the ED waiting room and triage procedures, and opening up additional medical and surgical beds. In other measures, Provena worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers, who develop healthcare solutions, to launch a six-month redesign of clinical practices in the ED.
The redesign culminated in a successful implementation on May 23rd of this year.
