The Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently released a report that looked at medical necessity and consecutive inpatient hospital stays. Specifically, the OIG focused on patients with three or more individual stays at an inpatient facility in which the patient's date of admission was one day after the discharge date of his or her previous stay. The inpatient facilities that the OIG looked at included rehabilitation units, psychiatric units, and skilled nursing units. The results of the inspection, which are published in "Consecutive Medicare Inpatient Stays," showed that the majority of consecutive inpatient stays were medically necessary, while 22% were due to poor quality of care and the fragmentation of healthcare services.
