Thirty percent of Mississippi's RNs are between the ages of 40 and 49, while only 10% are younger than 30. In addition, the state's aging population is creating a need for more healthcare workers, and the state predicts it will need 13% more family nurse practitioners by 2006. By 2020, when the majority of the state's population will reach retirement age, the state could be faced with a huge RN deficiency if younger RNs are not recruited to replace those who retire.
These statistics were discussed at the Mississippi Healthcare Workforce Summit, sponsored by the Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce, held in Jackson, MS. Wanda Jones, executive director of the Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce, called for more state and federal funding to solve the problem.
